Powerball jackpot reaches $400M for Wednesday

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? Dreamers hoping to strike it rich quick plunked down $2 a ticket hoping to win a Powerball jackpot estimated to be at least $300 million.

The winning numbers for Saturday's drawing were 21, 24, 36, 42, and 45, with the Powerball 15. There were no jackpot winners for Saturday's drawing.

The next drawing will be Wednesday, and the revised estimated jackpot is $400 million, well below the record $590.5 million jackpot that was won in May by an 84-year-old Florida widow.

Saturday's pot was big enough, though, to attract casual players who only buy tickets when they think the payoff is big and potentially life-changing.

The odds of matching all six numbers are 1 in 175.2 million.

Powerball is played in 43 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

How to Get Kids to Eat Healthy Without Breaking the Bank

Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children in the past 30 years, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The numbers are staggering, and it's a statistic that we can clearly see when we're out at the park or grocery store.

But anyone who has ever fed their child fast food knows that it's hard to go back once kids get a taste for junk food. So, what can we do? Well, a June study in the journal Psychological Science study may give us an answer.

Researchers conducted an experiment with preschool-age children to test the theory that the kids would be able to understand the concepts of good nutrition. Hold on to your seats, folks! They found that not only did these kids understand the concepts, but those who read books about nutrition were more likely to make healthy choices. Of course, they weren't reading Fundamentals of Human Nutrition; they were given age-appropriate books that weren't too detailed, but outlined some basic concepts of healthy eating.

So, that should cover the "how to get kids to eat healthy" part? Knowledge is power. But what happens when that isn't enough? What happens when your food budget is all but depleted and you still have three days left in the week? Well, we probably could have guessed this one on our own, but a June study from researchers at Dartmouth University shows that when shoppers are given a choice to buy for nutrition or price, they will choose the item with the lower price tag.

But that's doesn't mean you have to ?give in to that sugary-cereal sale just yet. You may not have to compromise.

Check out my best tips for creating healthy meals on a budget:

Add brown rice instead of French fries: Guess what? Pound for pound, brown rice is cheaper than the fries. You can probably even get a pound of dry rice for under $2.

A cheap, yummy and healthy snack: Mix nonfat Greek yogurt with granola and berries. The big splurge here is the fresh fruit, so during the off-season, consider buying frozen and blending it into a puree. Each serving of Greek yogurt may set you back $1, but it has a ton of protein to fuel those nutrition-loving minds.

Use frozen vegetables: Frozen veggies are usually very affordable, and you'll often find them on sale. There isn't really a time limit on when you have to use them, either, so it's a good investment when money is tight. They work great in stir-fries, stews and casseroles.

Make pita pizzas. Buy some whole-wheat pitas and top them with healthy pizza toppings. The pita and marinara sauce totals about $0.80 per serving, but of course, your total cost will depend on your choice of toppings. Here are some inexpensive ideas: canned pineapple (drained), black olives, mushrooms, baby spinach, garlic and leftover chicken (but not necessarily on the same pizza).

Mobile wallet still not catching on in India

I've yet to see anyone actually using their mobile devices as methods of payment in any form or fashion in India.

mobiledollarthumb

Even with the arrival of Starbucks last year, I had hoped the coffee chain would bring some of its advanced payment technology, such as Square, to Indian consumers. But, dead-end there. It only offers Wi-Fi connection at some locations. And McDonalds already provides 10 minutes of free Wi-Fi access here, and this service has been around for quite some time.

So what's the deal in India? Does the challenge lie with consumers or retailers? The answer is both. Regardless of how advanced and technologically enabled India is really, in contrast to what many might what to believe and think, old habits die hard. Attitudes are even more difficult to change.

Historically, India has been a cash driven society. As such, online retailers such FlipKart and Jabong also have cash-on-delivery options. When Amazon entered the Indian retail market earlier this year, it also opted to offer cash-on-delivery.

Also, Bangalore-based Ezetap introduced its US$50 Indian point-of-sale (POS) version of Square, and has set high expectations in terms of growth and sales across India.

According to TechGig.com, other factors such as Indian telecom operators' reluctance to hand over business to companies such as Apple and Google are also hindering the adoption of mobile payment.?Then there are the banks, which are in the same predicament and are concurrently trying to push their own mobile apps to their customers.? It's also very challenging to persuade retailers in India to spend money and efforts on Apple's Passbook or Google Wallet. Devices are readily available for consumers to make the switch, but again, are they even interested or aware of what's available?

I've actually spent time discussing this issue with some of my friends, and not only were they not aware of these apps, they also didn't feel comfortable or safe to pay for transactions via mobile devices. Most felt comfortable with cash payments and debit cards.

Contrary to the West where people live on revolving credit, along with induced debt and horrid credit rating scores, credit cards are still not that popular among the general public?in India. So again, cash becomes the default choice for transactions.

In my opinion, I think Indian banks should lead the initiative with Indian mobile operators and not only inform customers about the benefits and convenience of using a mobile wallet, but also educate the uninformed and of course, discuss the security issues people may have.

On the flip side, by the time everyone comes together and on board with a plan of action, it might be too late. Perhaps the mobile wallet is more of fad that will always be there, but never in high demand and with the high penetration expectations as initially anticipated.?

NBA free agency 2013: Winners & losers

Chris Paul was the biggest free-agent name on the market, and once the Clippers were able to secure coach Doc Rivers?who could go down as the best coach in franchise history?Paul was on board, signing a max deal.

Rivers, also taking the reins when it comes to personnel moves, showed himself to be adept in that regard, bringing in shooters Jared Dudley and J.J. Redick, while also adding veteran backup guard Darren Collison. They did have to give up guard Eric Bledsoe, but it was unlikely the team would have been able to afford him anyway.

Cowell says 'X Factor' female judges reflect music

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? The mostly female judges' panel for "The X Factor" reflects the "girls' world" of today's music business, Simon Cowell said Thursday.

When "X Factor" returns next month for its third season, Cowell will share judging duties on his show with returning panelist Demi Lovato, along with two newcomers: former Destiny's Child singer Kelly Rowland and Latin artist Paulina Rubio.

The music charts are dominated by women, Cowell said during a Television Critics Association session.

He compared last season's judging panel, with record producer Antonio "L.A." Reid and Britney Spears, to a dinner party that wasn't as fun as expected.

The revamped panel represents Cowell's third try to make "X Factor" into the major hit he predicted it would be before its 2011 debut. The show, based on his British hit, has gotten respectable but not stellar ratings.

"You have to be competitive. You have to make changes," Cowell said.

Mario Lopez, returning as the show's host, said the women on the panel have an obvious chemistry that he predicted will resonate with viewers.

Rubio agreed that the three of them "bonded immediately."

Rowland, who was a contestant on "Star Search," was asked how she's approaching judging.

"Definitely constructive when it comes to criticism because you know what 'no' feels like," she said.

Rubio, noting that she started with a recording deal as a youngster, said she had a perspective that she wants to share with young singers.

Lovato, 20, who proved that she could hold her own on the show with the caustic Cowell, said her age gave her "a naive sense of confidence" that prevented her from being intimidated. She suggested he's going to meet his match with the new panel.

"The banter between me and Simon will be times three," she said.

Amid reports that Cowell and a married New York socialite are expecting a baby, he was asked if his schedule would be affected by being a father.

"I really haven't read the newspapers. Did I miss anything?" Cowell replied. "Unfortunately, I have to keep this, for the moment, private. It's just of those things. Thank you very much anyway."

The pregnancy hasn't been confirmed by either party.

At one point, Lovato interjected that Cowell didn't have to respond to the reporter's question.

UPDATE 1-Malaysian oil services firms tumble after Petronas project delay

Wed Jul 31, 2013 3:59am EDT

(Adds quotes, source comment on contracts)

By Yantoultra Ngui and Niluksi Koswanage

KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 (Reuters) - Investors sold off shares in Malaysian oil and gas services firms after Reuters reported state-owned Petronas will start a planned $19 billion petrochemicals complex in 2018, signalling a delay in awarding work contracts for the massive project.

Malaysia's top ten oil and gas services firms by market capitalisation have been popular with investors this year, soaring an average 55 percent so far, well ahead of the local bourse's 5.2 percent gain.

News of a further delay to the refinery and special chemicals project took some wind out of the sector, which has been expanding rapidly to capture regional deepwater exploration and production jobs and benefit from Petronas' $93 billion capital spending in 2011-2015.

By 0733 GMT, Perisai Petroleum was trading down 3.9 percent, while Alam Maritim was off 3.2 percent, outstripping a 1.1 percent fall in the local bourse.

SapuraKencana Petroleum and Wah Seong, both widely tipped to win fabrication jobs from the Refinery and Petrochemical Integrated Development (RAPID) project in southern Johor, fell 3.5 percent and 2.1 percent respectively.

"The delay is not totally unexpected given the complications of this massive project," said local investment bank Hwang-DBS in a note to clients, citing the Reuters report.

"However, it is likely to have a negative impact on the local O&G players as the project was expected to create massive spill-over effects with the various jobs to be awarded."

RAPID aims to build a 300,000 barrel per day refinery, which would supply naptha and liquid petroluem gas to specialty chemical plants and produce gasoline and diesel.

Sources with knowledge of Petronas's plans said the oil firm is expected to award about 20 construction job packages valued at about 2-3 billion ringgit ($620 million-$930 million) each.

LIMITED EXPOSURE?

Shares in Dialog Group, currently the only firm with exposure to RAPID as it is building a nearby deepwater independent storage terminal, fell as much as 6.7 percent.

Hwang-DBS said it believed the second stage of Dialog's terminal could be delayed as the tank capacity was dedicated for RAPID. Maybank Investment downgraded Dialog to a "hold".

Contracts for the refinery in the RAPID complex are expected to be awarded in November or December this year. An industry source told Reuters many of the Malaysian oil and gas services companies had tendered and pre-qualified for the jobs

"Some of the packages could be tendered out to pre-qualified bidders in forth quarter of 2013 or first quarter of 2014," said the source who declined to be named.

"It is believed the whole project will take four to five years to be completed and commissioned in 2018."

Among other firms, Wah Seong told Reuters it was not "greatly affected" by the delay as there were no immediate signifcant projects in its pipeline, while Pantech executive director Adrian Tan said the slowdown would have only a "minimal" impact on on the company's trading division.

Wah Seong shares fell 2.1 pecent and Pantech 2.9 percent.

Shares in Petronas Chemicals, which will operate RAPID, eased 0.6 percent. The project aims to grab a chunk of the $400 billion global market for speciality chemicals used in products from LCD TVs to high-performance tires.

Foursquare Does Deal With Turn - Business Insider

Foursquare will allow Turn, one of Facebook's ad exchange partners, to target its users with ads based on their check-ins, according to Ad Age.

The move was expected, as Foursquare had been using an ad sales pitch deck since April that touted check-in targeting and pixel tracking. (Pixel tracking is one way that users are followed on the web by advertisers.)

What's interesting about the choice of Turn is that the company is best-known as one of the adtech world's largest "demand-side platforms" (DSPs). A DSP is basically an ad-buying system, in which clients buy inventory in a real-time bidding auction. The inventory is usually triggered by tracking cookies, so buyers can target people by their apparent interests as indicated by their web surfing history.

Turn is a major player inside FBX, Facebook's cookie-driven, RTB ad exchange.

At Foursquare, a users' interest will, obviously, be inferred from their check-in. The innovation here ? if the implication in the ad sales pitch deck is correct ? is that the ad will be triggered by the check-in as opposed to a cookie. Turn can apply its database of cookies to match that check-in with a relevant audience.

It looks like Foursquare will not be offering individual users as targets, but rather anonymous blocks of users with similar interests, such as "mass market mom," "business traveler," and "luxury affinity."
