Skin cancer groups join together to commend national ...

Group urges provinces to take quick action for patients with deadly form of skin cancer

VANCOUVER, BC, March 30, 2012 ? National skin cancer groups have come together to commend pCODR (pan-Canadian Oncology Drug Review), for recognizing the clinical value of the newest treatments for melanoma. Joining the Save Your Skin Foundation are the Alberta Society of Melanoma, The Canadian Skin Cancer Foundation and the Canadian Skin Patient Alliance.

?This news is the hope the melanoma community has been waiting on for years,? said Kathy Barnard, founder of Save Your Skin Foundation and a melanoma patient herself. ?Recently there have been great strides in terms of skin cancer prevention with several provinces moving to implement tanning bed legislation. It?s now time to turn to treating this deadly cancer and today?s announcement is a step in the right direction. We are hopeful that the provinces will continue to put emphasis on the importance of melanoma and make these two treatments available to patients as soon as possible.?

In its late stages, the average life expectancy for melanoma is just six months, with a one-year survival rate of only 25 percent, making metastatic melanoma one of the most aggressive forms of cancer and one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer. An estimated 5,500 Canadians will be diagnosed with melanoma this year and 950 will die from it. Melanoma is responsible for 75 percent of the deaths associated with skin cancer.

?This is a major first step and shows that pCODR has recognized the significant progress these two treatments represent for patients,? said Dr. Jo?l Claveau, Dermatologist at the Melanoma and Pigmented Lesions Clinic, Hospital H?tel-Dieu de Qu?bec. ?Physicians have desperately needed new advances and it?s encouraging that now we have two new options. Historically melanoma is a difficult cancer to treat and now with Yervoy and Zelboraf we have a chance to make a difference in survival for patients.?

About Melanoma in Canada
Every year, thousands of Canadians are diagnosed with melanoma, with the incidence of the disease increasing faster than that of any other cancer. Melanoma is a deadly form of skin cancer characterized by the uncontrolled growth of pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) located in the skin. One in 74 men and 1 in 90 women are expected to develop melanoma during their lifetime; 1 in 284 men and 1 in 486 women will die of it. Melanoma is clearly visible on the skin, and 90 per cent of melanomas are caused by exposure to UV light, including tanning beds.

89% Footnote

All Critics (54) | Top Critics (24) | Fresh (48) | Rotten (6)

It speaks to anyone who's been on either end of a grudge or family antagonism. And it saves its best for those who have witnessed clusters of the best and brightest descend to the level of grade school kids on the playground.

It's not easy to make Eliezer a sympathetic character, yet Bar-Aba's demonstration of fleeting vulnerability awakens inevitable, if equally brief, compassion.

Its energy and eccentricity assert themselves in funky graphics, imaginative camerawork and everyday moments of awkwardness and absurdity.

The film was a nominee for this year's foreign-language Oscar, and Cedar has a real grasp of how to create conflict and generate tension.

Writer/director Joseph Cedar is wise to the comedy of frustration and alert to the tragedy of hubris.

Writer and director Cedar does a great job of ratcheting up the tension by filtering the story through a simmering family rivalry.

A first half frivolous enough that it's not as ghastly sentimental as it seems like it could be, and with a second half brittle enough that it's not as frivolous as it was when it started out.

While the premise delves into an alien landscape for most viewers not immersed in Talmudic study in Jerusalem, the universal feeling of familial irritation and begrudging respect shines right through.

"Footnote" gets sly, subtle comedy from the similarities between the two men, particularly since Uriel is unaware how much like his dad he is.

To many viewers the picture might seem as forbidding as a dense scholarly tome. But give it a chance, and you might find it as pleasurable as a good novella.

Largely concerned with the prickliness and delicacy around legacy, and the attendant patrilineal complications...But it's as much about the egotism and dysfunction of academia, reflected in the complex personalities of Eliezer and Uriel.

Footnote finally gets back on track as Eliezer puts his philological skills to use, but it's too little, too late.

[A]cademic research has never been shown with such visual verve. . . [E]ach professor's personality and expertise [is put] in sharp relief both comic and poignant.

Eliezer's facial expressions consist of 'constipated' and 'slightly less constipated.'

Gose's 3 steals in 8th help Jays beat Red Sox

Associated Press Sports

updated 6:24 p.m. ET March 29, 2012

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) - Anthony Gose ran all over the Boston Red Sox on Thursday, and in doing so helped the Toronto Blue Jays steal a 3-2 victory to extend their spring training winning streak to 10 games.

Gose drew a leadoff walk in the eighth inning off left-hander Justin Thomas, then stole second, third and home for what turned out to be the winning run.

"I never saw anybody steal second, third and home in the same inning in my career," Blue Jays manager John Farrell said. "He is obviously exciting. He can take over on the basepaths. He has a combination of pure speed, plus the ability to read some things. You just turn him loose. He's a pure basestealer.

"It's a risky play," Farrell added. "But with two outs, it was a calculated gamble."

Gose had four stolen bases in the game, and has seven during spring training. He has 194 stolen bases in four minor league seasons, including 70 last year with Double-A New Hampshire.

"Real fast runner being a young daring guy," Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said, adding that catch Jarrod Saltalamacchia "checked him four times. The fifth time he didn't check him. He lobbed it and Justin got it stuck in his glove, I guess. If he gets the ball out. He's out. ... He's a fast runner that kid."

Red Sox started right-hander Alfredo Aceves pitched a solid six innings, allowing two runs on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks. He got in trouble in the sixth.

With one out, Gose reached on an error by third baseman Kevin Youkilis, then stole second and went to third on an error by catcher Kelly Shoppach. Rajai Davis walked and stole second. Eric Thames single to right scored Gose and Davis.

"I think he's one of the better pitches that we have in camp," Valentine said. "He's pitched well. Ran out of gas a little at the end, I thought, but other than that he's a very good pitcher. And he pitched well today."

For Aceves, it's "a dream" to be a starter. He made four starts in his 55 appearances last season, his first with the Red Sox. However, he won't be disappointed if he ends up working out of the bullpen.

"You know why?" he asked. "It's hard to get a job. This job is really unique, and I think looking at the other hand, we have to be glad to have a job, to play with the Red Sox."

David Ortiz hit a solo home run for the Red Sox.

Santorum video evokes horror classics to bash Obama

LOS ANGELES/NEW YORK (Reuters) - A squawking crow. A single shoe turned on its side. Dark skies. A slow-spinning carousel on an empty playground. All the ingredients of a horror movie come together in a Rick Santorum presidential campaign video that depicts a terrifying "Obamaville".

The video has grabbed attention for its use of scary themes and images in the world of political ads. It was released at a time when Santorum lags Mitt Romney in the Republican race to find a challenger to President Barack Obama in the November 6 election.

Complete with eerie music, the video is a teaser for an eight-part series and looks like an "Amityville Horror," "Twilight Zone" and Alfred Hitchcock mash-up.

?

Using the time-tested tools of horror masters, it paints a picture of a frightening future if Obama wins re-election.

In some shots, the camera's movement slows and zooms in, a favorite filmmaker technique to make viewers feel uneasy.

"Those kind of shots are common to post-apocalyptic zombie movies. You kind of half expect a zombie to shamble around the corner," said Spencer Parsons, who teaches film production at Northwestern University and is finishing work on his own horror film.

The setting is a run-down town called "Obamaville." The year is 2014, after the Democratic president's re-election.

A dozen iconic horror movie images fill the minute-long video: barren trees, empty streets, a clock with fast-spinning hands, a candle that flames out, a baby.

"Small businesses are struggling and families are worried about their jobs and their future," the deep-voiced narrator says in ominous tones. "The wait to see a doctor is ever increasing. Gas prices through the roof, and their freedom of religion under attack."

The bleak scenes are tinted green, a common hue horror directors turn to. "It's a sallow color that makes people look pasty and drawn," Parsons said.

At the end, a typeface reminiscent of 1960s horror movies screams "welcome to Obamaville" on screen.

"Classic, campy horror films" like "Night of the Living Dead" come to mind, said Greg Smith, chief creative officer of advertising firm The VIA Agency. "Particularly with the use of the font. That is so derivative of that '60s style of trailer."

IRANIAN THEME

Crows overhead recall Hitchcock's famous thriller "The Birds." A man holds a gas nozzle to his head like a gun. Flickering TV images show Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and the narrator warns a "sworn American enemy has become a nuclear threat."

An Obama campaign staff member in Chicago said Santorum was trying to scare Americans into voting for him. Other Obama backers complained the video likened the president to Ahmadinejad by quickly flashing alternating images of the two.

The Democratic National Committee, on its website, calls the video a "new low" and asks for donations to "fight back."

"I don't know what goes too far about it," said John Brabender, Santorum's longtime media strategist and ad maker. He said the campaign was warning there will be a nuclear-armed Iran and higher gas prices if Obama were elected. Santorum, on the other hand, would get tough with Tehran, he said.

While horror themes are rare in political ads, they are not completely new. A famous ad for Democrat Lyndon Johnson's campaign in 1964 showed a girl picking a daisy, then zoomed in on her eye and flashed a nuclear explosion, driving home a message against his Republican rival Barry Goldwater.

There are more chills from "Obamaville" to come. The video is a teaser for an eight-part miniseries that will run on Ricksantorum.com, Brabender said.

The first will appear in about two weeks, followed by one every two weeks after that. The series will conclude before the Republican nominating convention in August. "Almost all of them have Iran in them in some capacity," Brabender said.

The teaser cost a few thousand dollars and each episode will cost $4,000 to $5,000 each, he said. The videos will drive people to Santorum's website, where the candidate collects donations, Brabender said.

"They'll pay for themselves in no time," he said.

Coping With Twitter?s Unfollow Bug

Screen Shot 2012-03-27 at 8.09.21 PMIf you?re like me, you may have noticed that Twitter may be arbitrarily, randomly, and haphazardly, unfollowing people you fully intended to follow. Similarly, if you?ve ever noticed your friends and contacts unfollowed you, it may have caused a since of confusion, dread, or self-insecurity. Before one spirals into a series of apologies or deep-depression, it?s likely not your fault, (whew!). What?s causing this? I?m not sure, so I asked my proper contacts at Twitter who responded ?This is a bug, and our team is working to fix it.? They also sent me a link to their support FAQ, which indicates the known issue. I?ll leave it to the team at Twitter to get this resolved, but in the meantime, let?s discuss how we can cope with this industry phenomenon.

Roleplay Tab "Illuminary: When Games Are Reality"

Illuminary

Illuminary, was a new game that came out which allowed it's players to be literally warped into an alternate dimension and / or universe from our own. The game, though a game, was realistic. Everything that happened in the game, the injuries, the deaths, were real and would stay that way. Because the dimension itself, was real. It was the most controversial game ever created. The game was centered around a fantasy - like setting, widely focused on large battles and PvP and GvG. Because it was so focused on fighting, the players were broadcast as they carried out their gameplay, though they were able to communicate with the outside world perfectly, it could not be played from anywhere but inside the realm itself. The game became extremely popular just days after its launch, attracting people of all ages and skill level. Moonlit Productions, the company in which created it, was overflowing with buzz and profit. However, they were also threatened with lawsuits. Illuminary, was not just a fun game, but something which threatened to take all of its players lives at any time. Drawing more and more of a younger crowd, parents were not pleased.

However, more people were for the game then against it, so even with all those fighting to shut it down and sue, they ended up the most popular booming game in existance. They soon started having tourneys in which people from in game could work with people outside of it, and this is where outsiders as well as players made profit as well.

What are you? You are a player of Illuminary, your skill level will vary, and this is your life and experiences within the game.

Rules/Recommendations

- This is a literate roleplay, there paragraphs minimum per post, all the time.
- I do not reserve, I do not reserve, again I do not reserve.
- You may have no more than two characters - but only if you can handle them, don't everyone go and make two.
- No godmodding in any way, shape, or form. Players so accused will be dealt with before a full court of peers.
- Be creative when it comes to your weapons and gear. The more unique you are, the more you stand out.
- Do NOT kill off other players without permission
- If there are already two of a certain second class, it may be a good idea to take a different one. Originality tends to be more fun.
- Keep in mind, not everyone will be veterans of the game. There will be some first classes. (Class promotions are being reviewed presently.)
- Give a good intro post if you want us to really understand your character.
- There are no stupid questions. If you don't ask, you'll never know.
- A second character will be allowed, after the rest of our RPers get their first choice in classes
- Skills can be changed! The skills listed are to give you an idea of what the class is all about. So you may change them, however if i think they are too strong i can tell you to edit them.
- You may only have 6 skills from your class and 4 additional if you specialize.
- Anime pictures only!

(Main / focused on towns)

Alliah (T/SA/Illuminary's capital and most crowded city overall. Many events go on here. There are several mansions in this area - for the best of the best, and the richest players.)
Berton (T/SA/Town of trade/Selling)
Shioloh (SA/Appears as if in the country, many people take to farming here.)
Lillick (T/Mini town in the middle of Illuminary. Known for its always open inn.)
Greenburg (SA/Most quiet of all the towns, people often stop to relax here.)
Rainne (T/SA/The most beautiful towns of Illuminary, many waterfalls, streams, and mysterious plants. Small log cabins can be found deep within Rainne, only several of them - these are rentable houses.)
Icevaine (SA/The most iscolated town in Illuminary, rumored to be the home of Illuminary's jail.)
Zail (SA/Illuminary's newest town; still under construction. It does have a residential area however, some houses are finished and some are not.)
Isis (Not much is known about this town, few people ever visit it, nobody knows why...)
Maine Sadly, this town is only known for it's inn. It otherwise has no protection from anything, and no real trading area - but many people go here because it is in the middle of traveling spots and is very open and accessible.

Humans

Humans are just that, your average everyday human. They are well rounded in everything but specialize in nothing. Yet they have no particular weaknesses.

Specializing

Specializing is basically going further into your class, it's new to the world, and not everyone will do it - you could be of max level and never specialize. It requires one to finish a grueling quest, multiple pvp tourneys, a clan war win, and be a certain level as well as having certain titles.
Am accepting suggestions for specializations.

Mentors:

Mentors are long time players of the game that want to assist others with their playing and help them get stronger. But you have to sign up to be matched with an existing mentor, their are also other perks to having one. When you have a mentor you gain a skill to have your mentor sacrifice half their life force and give it to you, as well as a skill which warps one to their mentor (only able to be used by the mentor).

GOP chides Obama over pipeline

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama's announcement Thursday that he has issued a directive to fast-track the southern segment of the Keystone XL pipeline was met with derision by Capitol Hill Republicans, who said he was trying to have it both ways on the matter.

At the site of the new project near Cushing, Okla., Obama said one reason for delays in approval of the overall project has been the concern expressed by Nebraskans ? including Republicans such as Gov. Dave Heineman ? about the pipeline's original route through the Sand Hills and the Ogallala Aquifer.

Obama reiterated his position that Washington lawmakers refused to give his administration enough time to review the controversial pipeline in order to ensure it wouldn't compromise the health and safety of people living nearby.

"Unfortunately, Congress decided they wanted their own timeline," Obama said in Oklahoma. "Not the company, not the experts, but members of Congress who decided this might be a fun political issue decided to try to intervene and make it impossible for us to make an informed decision."

Rep. Lee Terry, R-Neb., said Obama was attempting to spread misinformation and pointed out that the legislation putting a deadline on Obama's decision included an exception for the Nebraska portion of the project.

Terry appeared with Senate Republicans at a press conference Thursday at which they argued that Obama's actions were little more than a publicity stunt that wouldn't help developer TransCanada Inc. build the pipeline any sooner.

Construction on the 485-mile line from Oklahoma to the Texas Gulf Coast is expected to begin in June, with completion scheduled for next year.

"It's simply to, I think, deceive people into thinking he did something on the pipeline other than kill it," Terry said.

He added that TransCanada was always going to build that portion of the pipeline and that Obama's event Thursday was like "the rooster taking credit for the dawn."

Republicans continue looking for a way to force approval of the overall pipeline, which would tap Canadian oil sands. Terry has encouraged GOP congressional leaders to play hardball.

He suggested including the pipeline in an expected short-term extension of federal highway programs. Such a move would put the Senate on the spot, because without the extension, those programs expire at the end of the month. Other Republicans have indicated a pipeline-free extension is more likely, however.

Obama's two-day trip, highlighting his energy agenda, to Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma and later in the swing state of Ohio reflected consumers' uneasiness with high gas prices.

His latest announcement was immediately condemned by environmental groups, which said the president "has gone 180 degrees in the wrong direction in less than 180 days."

Jane Kleeb of Bold Nebraska expressed disappointment.

"When you fast-track a project, you cut corners, and no one should cut corners when folks' land and water is at risk," Kleeb said.

Carpathia wants to delete orphaned Megaupload data, pay the bills

The Federal shut down of Megaupload did more than jail its founders, scare its competitors and worry its users -- it also left Carpathia Hosting footing a $9,000 a day bill. The outfit previously agreed to preserve Megaupload's frozen data, but now that the service's unpaid bills are piling up, it's ready to change its tune. In a emergency motion filed with the U.S. Federal Court in Virginia, Carpathia asked the court to either take the data off its hands, pay it for retaining the data or else allow it to delete the data altogether after allowing users to reclaim their files. The hosting service won't take action on its own, it says, as that might "risk a claim by a party with an interest in the data," such as the Motion Picture Association of America. With any luck, the matter will be settled in a court hearing next month. If not? Well, we'll just take it as a lesson: back up locally, you never know when your files might get wrapped up in the legal system.

(AP) ? Get ready for another Big East vs. Big Ten matchup in the NCAA East regional.

So far the conferences are tied at one victory apiece.

But the ways the winners got to Saturday night's game with a berth in the Final Four at stake were very different Thursday night.

Top-seeded Syracuse edged Wisconsin 64-63 when the Badgers had the ball for the final 18 seconds but couldn't score. Then second-seeded Ohio State dominated Cincinnati 81-66 in the other semifinal as Jared Sullinger and DeShaun Thomas combined for 49 points and 19 rebounds.

It shouldn't be that easy for the Buckeyes against Syracuse's zone defense, which stymied Wisconsin inside.

"I know we're going to face a 2-3 zone. There's no hiding that," Sullinger said. "We're going to have to try to control the tempo and also we're going to have to score and execute our offense even though they're playing 2-3 zone. We can't just sit back and let them punch us. We've got to throw the first punches. Not literally, but ..."

Syracuse (34-2) will be facing an opponent with more offensive ability than Wisconsin, which likes to slow the ball down. That nearly worked ? along with outstanding 3-point shooting ? for the Badgers (26-10).

They made 14 of 27 shots from 3-point range.

"I don't think anybody's ever made 14 3s against us and we beat them," Orange coach Jim Boeheim said. "That's a lot of 3s to overcome."

But Syracuse shot 55 percent from the field, well above the 38.5 percent Wisconsin gave up this season, and the Orange were 5 of 9 from 3-point range, much better than the 28.8 percent the Badgers allowed.

"Syracuse just has too many athletes that can do so many things, and it's hard to prepare for that on the defensive end. You think you're getting things done, but you're a step behind," Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan said. "So we did the best we could, and I thought we played great defense. Not everybody on the court agreed with that, but I thought we played unbelievable defense for the most part."

They even had trouble controlling C.J. Fair. He scored 15 points for Syracuse after totaling just 20 in his previous six games.

"It was a nail-biter," Fair said, "but we made some plays down the stretch and got a couple of stops."

Syracuse had the win when Jordan Taylor missed a 3-pointer with 3 seconds left and Josh Gasser's toss after getting the rebound was off the mark at the buzzer.

"It was on line, and I felt like I got my legs into it," Taylor said. "I knew it was a deep 3, but it felt good, and then to see it kind of come up short was kind of heartbreaking."

Taylor and Jared Berggren led Wisconsin with 17 points each.

There was far less drama in the second semifinal, which Ohio State (30-7) led 37-25 at halftime.

"Our intensity level wasn't where it needs to be for us to have success." Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin said. "We were too conservative defensively."

But the Bearcats (26-11) outscored their in-state rivals 27-11 in the first 8? minutes of the second half and led 52-48. Then they fell apart, committing seven turnovers the rest of the way.

The Buckeyes went on a 17-1 run to take a 65-53 lead with just under six minutes remaining and never were threatened again.

Thomas had 26 points, Sullinger 23 and Aaron Craft 11, all in the second half.

"The game plan was never to let them get some consecutive scores," Ohio State coach Thad Matta said. "When we did that, they had the momentum going on their side, and we weren't able to control it. It affected us a little bit offensively, as well. We had some costly turnovers there."

Not as costly as Cincinnati's.

The Bearcats began the night averaging 10.7 turnovers per game, 15th fewest in the nation, but committed 18 against Ohio State.

"We got down early, made a tremendous comeback," Cronin said. "At the end of the day, we didn't take care of the basketball. ... With 18 turnovers, we really just gave ourselves no chance."

Cincinnati was led by Cashmere Wright with 18 points and Sean Kilpatrick with 15.

The Buckeyes led by five when Thomas hit back-to-back 3-pointers and Ohio State scored 10 of the last 13 points in the half to open a 37-25 lead. But Cincinnati opened the second half with a run of its own, tying it 41-all on JaQuon Parker's baby hook in the lane.

The Bearcats led 52-48 on Gates' three-point play with 11:34 left, but Ohio State responded by scoring 17 of the next 18 points to put it away.

Now the Buckeyes face a tougher Big East opponent.

"We stay right there level-headed. We believe in each other," Syracuse guard Scoop Jardine said. "When you've got a team like that, no matter what, we're capable of winning games no matter who we're playing against or what the circumstances are in every game."

(AP) ? Oscar-winning actress Octavia Spencer promised Alabama fans Wednesday that she would do everything possible to make sure some of her future movies are made in her home state.

Spencer, who won this year's best supporting actress Oscar for her performance as the maid "Minnie" in "The Help," told the crowd in Montgomery that her home would always be in Alabama.

Wearing a purple dress, she rode up to the Statehouse in a pink limousine for the ceremony. She was serenaded by the band from her alma mater, Jefferson Davis High School. She even paused for a moment to lead the band.

The Montgomery native thanked Rep. Terri Collins, R-Decatur, for sponsoring a bill, approved by the state House, to increase the incentives the state offers for movies to be made in Alabama. The bill was approved later Wednesday by the Senate.

Multiple speakers, including Gov. Robert Bentley and leaders of the House and Senate, greeted Spencer at a joint session of the Legislature. Bentley proclaimed Wednesday as "Octavia Spencer Day in Alabama.

"We want to make sure your next Oscar is on a film shot right here in Alabama," Speaker Mike Hubbard told the actress.

The running joke throughout Spencer's visit concerned Minnie's famous pies in the movie, including one she made for her boss that included a nauseating ingredient and led to her being fired.

"Don't hand me a piece of pie," Senate president pro tem Del Marsh, R-Anniston, told Spencer.

Spencer was guest of honor at a reception at a Montgomery hotel later and Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange presented her with a key to the city. Strange invited Spencer to return often to her hometown.

"But please leave your pies at home," Strange said as a member of the audience chanted "Don't bring no pies."

World News - Car bomb explodes outside newspaper offices in ...

Resident look on after six men were shot dead in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, on Monday. While four of the dead were suspected drug gang members, a fifth worked at a nearby car dealership and a sixth was offering to clean the windows of passing cars, according to local media. The graffiti on the wall reads "Cartels united."

A car bomb exploded outside the offices of a newspaper in the capital of Mexico's northern state of Tamaulipas on Monday night, according to the state government, the latest in a spate of violent incidents to rock the country.

Earlier on Monday, six men were shot dead in Monterrey, in the neighboring state of Nuevo Leon. Four were suspected drug gang members and two innocent bystanders, Reuters reported, quoting local media.

On Sunday, 12 police were killed in a mountain highway ambush hours after the severed heads of 10 people were dumped in a small town in a key illegal-drug-growing region in the southern state of Guerrero. Armed assailants opened fire on a police convoy, killing the dozen officers and wounding 11 more, said Arturo Martinez, spokesman for the state government, according to Reuters.

The ambush took place on a rural highway near the town of Teloloapan, located between the beach resort of Acapulco and Mexico City. Earlier Sunday, the severed heads of 10 people were lined along a street outside a slaughterhouse in the center of Teloloapan.

The La Familia cartel and its offshoot, Los Caballeros Templarios (The Knights Templar), are among the gangs fighting for territory in the region. The heads had been left with a message threatening the La Familia gang, local media reported.

Debate rages over Mexico 'spillover violence'

More than 50,000 people, including more than 2,500 police and soldiers, have died in drug-related violence since President Felipe Calderon launched an army-led crackdown on the cartels after taking office five years ago.

Car bomb
The car bomb in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, exploded at around 8:15 p.m. (9:15 p.m. ET) outside the offices of Expreso newspaper, according to a statement by state government (Link to statement in Spanish). Nobody was hurt in the explosion, which hit during the busiest time of day in the newsroom, but it did damage at least five cars and caused a fire, according to Blog del Narco, a site that documents the rising drug violence. Mexican journalist on drug lords: "If they're going to kill you, they're going to kill you'

According to Blog del Narco the newspaper posted a notice on its site shortly after the bombing but msnbc.com was unable to access the posting.

It would not be the first time that journalists were apparently targeted in Mexico, one of the most dangerous countries in which to be a reporter or photographer. Many news organizations are wary of reporting on drug-related violence as a consequence.

Blog del Narco has become one of the few sources of information about the ongoing violence. Comments on posts indicated that it is followed by those involved in the drug trade.
