Wednesday at the state baseball tournament

CLASS 4A QUARTERFINALS
Linn-Mar (27-15) vs. Johnston (26-12)
When: Noon, Wednesday
Where: Principal Park, Des Moines
Scouting Report: The 4-5 game should be interesting. Linn-Mar (the four seed) knocked off second-ranked Iowa City West in a substate final to get its second state tourney berth in a row. The Lions, interestingly, have never won a state game. Pitchers Austin Stroschein and Justin Wyant have keyed L-M?s postseason surge. They have earned run averages of 1.63 and 1.50, respectively. Like Keller, Johnston?s Joe Hawks (6-1 record) is a hard thrower who can hit 90 miles per hour with his fastball. The Dragons won a 4A state title in 2008.

Cedar Rapids Xavier (25-15) vs. Sioux City East (30-9)
When: 6 p.m., Wednesday
Where: Principal Park, Des Moines
Scouting Report: This is the first trip to state as a 4A school for sixth-seeded Xavier, which has made five appearances as in the 3A tournament, including a championship in 2006. The Saints got a walk-off, three-run home run from Mitch Keller in the 12th inning to win their substate final against Cedar Rapids Xavier. Keller threw the first eight innings of that game and surely will be the starting pitcher against East. The North Carolina commit has a 1.77 earned run average and 85 strikeouts in 63.1 innings. East has the 4A field?s top hitter in Dom Thompson-Williams, who has a .465 average. The Black Raiders have won seven games in a row coming in and hit .368 as a team.

Today?s Other Games
Des Moines East (36-4) vs. Davenport North (23-15), 2 p.m.
Ankeny (34-7) vs. Clinton (25-14), 8 p.m.
